Folic Acid and Autism

February 22nd, 2013

Recent evidence has shown that women who take folic acid supplements prior to conception have children with a significantly lowered incidence of severe autism.

The evidence of also has shown that in order to be the most effective, the folic acid should be started a couple of months before conception.  This of course does not help the nearly 50% of all pregnancies in this country that are unplanned.

Nonetheless, based upon this information, women should be aware that if they are attempting a pregnancy they should be on a folic acid supplement as soon as they make that decision.  For those women who find themselves pregnant when they really hadn’t planned it, they should make sure they start a folic acid supplement as soon as they discover they are pregnant.
